\"Figma for 3D\" — What's Actually True, What's Marketing

Every browser 3D tool eventually says "we're Figma for 3D". The phrase carries genuine value (real-time collab, browser-native, design-first) and genuine baggage (every team uses it, the meaning has eroded). Here's a category-honest take on what the comparison actually means in 2026.

What "Figma for X" really meant

Figma's breakthrough wasn't real-time collab — Google Docs predated it. It was three things together:

  1. Browser-native — no install, no version drift.
  2. Multi-cursor live collab — designers + developers + product in one file.
  3. Designer-first primitives — frames, components, auto-layout, constraints.

Adopting one or two of those features doesn't make you Figma. Adopting all three for a different domain might.

The 3D contenders

Spline. Browser ✅. Live collab ✅ (no AI in the room). Designer-first ✅ for asset-level work, less so for whole scenes. Verdict: closest analog by usage, but the AI is asset-level.

Vectary. Browser ✅. Live collab ✅. Designer-first ✅ for configurators specifically. Verdict: configurator-Figma, not scene-Figma.

Womp. Browser ✅. Live collab ✅. Designer-first ✅ for consumer-makers. Verdict: maker-Figma, narrower lane.

Yugma. Browser ✅. Live collab + AI in the chat ✅. Designer-first ✅ via natural-language prompts. Verdict: AI-native scene-Figma.

Where the analogy breaks

3D has a problem Figma didn't: physics, scale, lighting. A 2D vector tool doesn't worry about whether two rectangles overlap correctly in 3D space. A 3D tool does, and AI scene composition is the only category trying to automate that judgment.

Figma also benefited from a clean canvas — frames, layers, no z-coordinate. 3D scenes have transforms, materials, and lights all with their own constraints. The mental load is genuinely higher; "Figma for 3D" understates that.

What the analogy gets right

The shift is real. Designers want:

Every 3D tool that nails those five things eats some of Blender's lunch. Whether it's "Figma for 3D" or just "the modern way to do 3D" is a marketing call.

Why we say it less

Yugma was "Figma for 3D" in early decks. We use it less now because the AI-native angle is more specific and more honest. Yugma is to 3D what Cursor is to code — not the existing tool with extras, but a tool architected around the AI being the primary input.

That's a different sentence than Figma's. And we think the right one.
