The End of the 3D Mouse — A Controversial Take
Photoshop, Illustrator, Figma — all built around a mouse + canvas + tool palette. 3D tools borrowed the same mental model. Maya, Blender, SketchUp, Spline — same canvas, same toolbar, same right-click context menu, same hours-of-keybindings learning curve. The mouse drove the work.
Honest position: most 3D work doesn't need a mouse anymore. Here's why.
# What the mouse is good at
Pixel-precise direct manipulation. Selecting one vertex among 10,000. Sculpting a curve free-hand. Picking a color from a real-world reference photo. Dragging a Bezier handle.
These are all real and valuable. They cover ~30% of 3D work.
# What the mouse is bad at
Compositional decisions. "Where should the second chair go relative to the first?" The mouse is a million micro-clicks for a question that has a clean verbal answer.
Layout tasks. "Put 8 chairs around the table evenly." The mouse needs you to place each chair, then run align + distribute. The verbal version is one sentence.
Material recipes. "Make this brushed brass with a soft scratch pattern." The mouse needs you to find roughness 0.35, metalness 1.0, brass color #b5a642, optional scratch normal map. The verbal version is one sentence.
Spatial relationships. "Move the lamp to the corner near the window." The mouse needs you to identify the corner, the window, the lamp, then drag carefully. The verbal version is one sentence.
That's the 70% of 3D work where prompts beat clicks.
# What about the dev
Devs build with code, not mice. Three.js / R3F / Babylon let you write the scene. The argument scales the same way: AI tool calls are the equivalent of a designer typing. Fewer Three.js method calls + more "type a sentence, the model emits the calls".
# Where the mouse keeps winning
- Sculpting (Blender, ZBrush). The hand has to feel the curve.
- Procedural geometry nodes. The graph is a visual data flow.
- Photo retouching. Pixel-precise, eye-driven.
- One-vertex-among-10000 selection.
These survive. They're 30% of the work.
# What this means for tools
Tools that try to do all 100% with the mouse will get eaten in the 70%. Tools that try to do all 100% with prompts will fail in the 30%. The winning tools split: prompt-first for composition, mouse for the precision tasks.

# What this means for designers
Learn prompts. Not as a replacement for mouse skills — as the new primary input mode for compositional tasks. Designers fluent in both will out-deliver designers fluent in only the mouse, the same way designers fluent in Figma out-delivered designers stuck in Photoshop.
# What this means for the next decade
3D tools will follow code editors. Cursor and Zed shipped AI-native; VS Code added Copilot; Vim users adapted. There will be 3D-native AI tools (Yugma, hopefully others), AI features bolted onto existing tools (Spline, Blender), and a shrinking minority who keep using only the mouse.
All three approaches survive. The center of gravity shifts.

Sit at your 3D tool tomorrow morning. Time the first hour. Count how many of those clicks would have been better as a sentence. The number will surprise you.
